Obadiah

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, delivering a sharp prophetic message against the nation of Edom for its pride, violence, and betrayal of Judah. The book announces God’s coming judgment on Edom and affirms that the Lord defends His people. Obadiah also looks forward to the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom.

Author: Obadiah

Audience: Judah and surrounding nations

Date: Most likely around 586 BC, after Jerusalem’s fall

Location Written: Judah

Context: When Babylon attacked Jerusalem, the Edomites, descendants of Esau, took advantage of Judah’s suffering. Instead of helping, they acted with hostility, looting the city and capturing fleeing Israelites. Obadiah’s prophecy condemns Edom’s arrogance and violence, declaring that God will repay them and restore His people. The book reminds readers that God’s justice prevails even when betrayal comes from close relatives.
