Nahum

Nahum is a prophetic book announcing God’s judgment on Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. Once shown mercy in Jonah’s day, Nineveh had returned to violence, cruelty, and oppression. Nahum reveals God as a righteous judge who defends the oppressed and brings down arrogant nations. The book is a message of comfort for Judah and a warning to all who oppose God.

Location Written: Judah

Context: Assyria was the dominant world power known for brutality and aggression. After previously repenting in Jonah’s time, Nineveh again became corrupt. Nahum declares God’s wrath against the nation that had devastated Israel and threatened Judah. The prophecy foretells Nineveh’s total destruction, which occurred in 612 BC. Nahum highlights God’s justice, sovereignty, and care for His people.
