Nehemiah

Nehemiah tells the story of Jerusalem’s physical and spiritual restoration after the Babylonian exile. As a cupbearer to the Persian king, Nehemiah receives permission to rebuild the city’s broken walls. Despite opposition, discouragement, and internal struggles, Nehemiah leads the people with prayerful dependence and perseverance. The book highlights leadership, covenant renewal, and God’s faithfulness.

Location Written: Jerusalem

Context: Following the return of exiles under Zerubbabel and Ezra, Jerusalem still lacked fortification and stability. Nehemiah arrives to rebuild the walls and restore dignity to the city. His efforts face opposition from neighboring enemies and moral compromise within the community. With the help of Ezra, the people renew their commitment to God’s law. Nehemiah emphasizes righteous leadership and community reform.
